sustainable / thoughtful

sustainable design is all about change.

i give everything a lot of thought: is this essential? how to create & consume less? is it possible to build a business from my point of view? how to make it last? is it wearable or is it art?

slow / design

it’s a slow process, changing our habits, rethinking how to create clothes when we need fewer of them.

my design philosophy is sustainable, special, & super thoughtful. my approach is holistic, every step in the creative process is an opportunity to do things differently.

materials / care

i use materials that biodegrade, feel good on the body, and are easy to care for - natural fibers, recycled synthetics, & designer deadstock fabrics.

caring for our clothes is one way to make them last. i create clothes that are wash & wear, that you can wash cold and air dry.

transparency / supply chain

transparency is honesty. i’m building a personal brand, sharing my creative process from my point of view. i share the source of all my materials so you can follow the supply chain.

i write all of my product descriptions, listing all the ways each garment is special. i itemize the cost of development & production revealing the true cost. i’m open about the challenges of building a sustainable small business & i share my solutions, creating a roadmap for others to follow.

finishes / quality

design is in the details. i use couture finishes to reinforce seams, adding a hand finished touch to each garment. i add pockets to almost all of my dresses & skirts. i consider the type of bra & underwear you’ll have to wear to feel comfortable in my clothes.

quality takes time. i spend a long time in the development stage: sourcing high-quality fabrics, reworking my ideas into samples, & making sure the fit is functional. i’m trying to create better garments so they last.

made to order / essential

some garments are handmade upon purchase, reducing overstock & wasted materials. each order is hand cut, reconstructed, & finished in small batches,

producing one by one is slow, between two to four weeks from order to shipment. demand comes before supply, only creating what is essential.

small batch collections / special

all of my collections are handmade in limited quantities. every piece is thoughtfully designed & handcrafted in downtown la.

special is something you hold on to. i add value by creating pieces that transition from the week to the weekend depending on how you style them. i design clothes to be loved.

made is los angeles / small business

made in los angeles with people i care about. the benefits of creating in la include: supporting local small biz, collaborating with friends, & investing in our community.

as a small business owner, every order is cause for celebration. with that in mind, i source most of my materials in local shops, collaborate with local creatives, & donate monthly to charities supporting fellow angelenos. by supporting each other & investing in our neighbors we can build a more sustainable community.

ethical / living wage

i’m an independent designer supported by my day job in art world. i work with local, independent contractors to help with the design & production of each collection. ethical fashion is paying people a living wage.

i’ve negotiated fair & ethical wages with my collaborators. we’ve designed mutually beneficial rates that allow us to build our businesses, while also recognizing what it takes to make a living.

zero waste / reuse

leave no trace, but make it fashion. i recycle everything i can but my goal is to consume less in every step of the process.

i make scrunchies from my fabric scraps. i use recycled garments to make some of my samples. i reuse my polybags each season, minimizing my plastic waste. i consider the end use of all my marketing materials.

gently used / recycling

i source gently used pieces to reconstruct and/or style with my original designs. i’m dedicated to minimizing my use of new materials & extending the life cycle of existing garments.

100 billion articles of clothing are produced annually & 57 tons of textile waste are trashed every year. i recycle materials back into the loop.

ellice ruiz-community.JPG

community / giving

community is investing in the wellbeing of our friends and building relationships with our neighbors. a better future is possible if we support those challenging the status quo.

giving back is part of my creative process. i donate consistently to foot on foot & summaeverythang. i’m inspired by these organizations empowering people by supporting them from the ground up.

plastic-free packaging / reforestation

most plastic waste comes from packaging. i ship all orders using 100% post-consumer paper materials: tissue paper, kraft paper, & boxes. consuming less is the only way to reduce waste.

with the help of the national forest foundation, i plant a tree with each order to offset my carbon use. everything’s a cycle, reforestation is one way to move towards balance.

clothes / environment

sustainable fashion is a lifestyle, rethinking how to live a more thoughtful life. by consuming less, investing in sustainable alternatives, and giving back, we can reduce our impact on the environment.

i’m building a fashion brand that is all about change.
